Window at the Henryton Sanatorium. This place was built by the state of Maryland in 1922 to house african-american tuberculosis patients. Later it was converted to house those deemed by the state to be "severely and profoundly retarded". It was finally shut down in the 1980's, abandoned and left to decay. The buildings have been partially destroyed by vandals and arsonists, but they retain a heavy feeling of oppression and unhappiness.

Unmarked graves at the Western State Hospital - formerly known as the Western Lunatic Asylum. This institution opened in 1825 to serve the mentally ill. There are about 500 graves in the back of the property, where patients were buried. The graves have no names or even numbers -- perhaps suggestive of the type of care these people received and how they were perceived by society at large.
